Professor and author ADAM ROBERTS (University of London) will give a
GUEST LECTURE on THURSDAY 8 SEPTEMBER AT 5 PM in Lecture Room 4,
Metsätalo (Unioninkatu 40, 2nd floor), on

                                      THE THING ITSELF

The talk focuses on The Thing Itself, Professor Roberts' most recent
science-fiction novel about how the German philosopher Immanuel Kant's
classic notion "das Ding an sich" informs future research into the
very essence of being.

Adam Roberts is Professor of English literature and creative writing
at Royal Holloway, University of London. His specialisations include
the nineteenth century and science fiction, in which fields he is a
leading scholar, having published studies such as Silk and Potatoes.
Contemporary Arthurian Fantasy (1998) and The History of Science
Fiction (2006). He is also one of the leading British science-fiction
authors ever since his first novel Salt (2000), which was nominated
for the Arthur C. Clarke Award (he has later received two more such
nominations and several other awards). As an author, Roberts is one of
the most imaginative authors in contemporary fiction in any language
or genre, with about thirty books of straight and parodic science
fiction as well as literary criticism.
